- Modena, Leone (Leon of Modena)
(1571-1648)
Italian rabbi, scholar and writer. Born in Venice, he initially became an elementary teacher and preacher there. In his autobiography, Hayyei Yehudah, he listed the various occupations he resorted to throughout his life. He was regarded by Christian scholars as the most distinguished Jewish scholar of his day. His writings include sermons, as well as polemics against the oral law, the kabbalah and Christianity.
